Wayland Community Radio

Ashill-based Wayland Community Radio gained its OFCOM licence in April 2009.

Manager David Hatherly approached Robert with a number of issues: he needed funding for equipment and operation. He also felt the need to strengthen community links in the area in which he was broadcasting.

One of the suggestions Robert made was to encourage them to apply for a Grassroots grant. This proved to be successful and the station was awarded £5000 which they used to purchase much needed equipment.

David said: “I gained a lot from my meeting with Robert; encouragement from someone who understands social enterprise and who could see the value of the project and the possible opportunities.”

David found Robert to be a refreshing change from standard advisors. “The whole process was not as I had expected it to be. Having had poor experiences I was not expecting to find someone who understood what we are aiming to achieve and have the skills to give appropriate advice.”

Robert also introduced David to Myles Cooper at Business Link who agreed to provide a grant to cover the marketing and PR launch. Turnpike Farm then assisted through the summer launch and beyond and WCR benefitted from new equipment, links and promotional material to use on an ongoing basis.

“Robert is relaxed, intuitive, sensitive, wise and down to earth. He uses his experience and wisdom for one’s benefit.”

Robert said: ‘Dave is a highly personable and professional broadcaster, but a life working for the BBC did not develop his marketing skills. That’s the gap we helped him to plug.’
